Remember why you liked comics in the first place?
Our Comics Empower Project continues!
This time, Nicole tells her story:
I got started in the world of comics coming out of a mentality crippling experience.
I was a nationally ranked cosplayer a year ago and after politics ruined my career in costuming, I was about the throw it in.
All 5 years of hard work, blood, sweat and tears, I was just going to give it all up. My partner, who cosplayed with me, suggested that we look for something fun to break the tension, a costume not bound by rules.
Then we found Batwoman.
The comic sunk into my heart and has become the mantra for my daily living. Not only did the story inspire me to become a writer of comics myself, but the character gave me a new hope to soldier on in the worst of times and to be the strong female lady that the world deserves.
I have been an avid collector and lover of comics for the last year and a half and since becoming a writer of my own series, I have not once looked back at my old life but embraced the new one, writing, reviewing and reading comics every chance I get.
Though now I cosplay the characters I love for charity instead of judges and stage applause.
Comics have the power to change life, to renew life and to give life. They may just be drawings and words to some but to others they give us a whole new way of existing.
